PALFINGER upgrades lifeboats for Norwegian oil platform Brage

02.03.2020

Brage, one of the oldest oil fields on the Norwegian continental shelf, has been granted a lifetime extension. PALFINGER secured an extensive refurbishment contract to upgrade the platform’s lifeboats.

Around 120 km west of Bergen, Norway, lies Brage, the first manned platform operated by the European oil and gas company Wintershall Dea. After more than 25 years of production, the oil field has been granted a lifetime extension by Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA). PALFINGER won a major service contract to upgrade the FF48.2 lifeboats installed on the Brage platform.

Freefall lifeboats renewed
“The four type-FF48.2 freefall lifeboats will be sandblasted and repainted to properly prepare them for an extended lifetime. At the same time, we will upgrade them with LED lighting, and the engine will be reset and equipped with a dyno brake. Several vital components will be exchanged so that the lifeboats will be as good as new when they go into the field again,” says Kristine Gjengedal, project manager at PALFINGER. The upgrade is scheduled to be completed this year.

PALFINGER, expert for lifetime extensions
The four boats at Brage are going one by one to PALFINGER’s factory at Ølve. Engineering and project management will be carried out by PALFINGER’s lifetime extension experts in Seimsfoss, Norway.

“This is a very important project for us. Aside from our core business, we have significantly extended our expertise over the past years and become a reliable partner for life extensions,” says Offshore Sales Director Oddgeir Mælen. “As for all our projects, time is of the essence here. For such upgrades, the customer must be assured that we will deliver the boats on time so that they always have sufficient means of rescue on the platform. With a proven track record of several upgrades carried out in the past, our lifetime-extension team has shown repeatedly that PALFINGER is a reliable partner for this and future refurbishment projects,” concludes Oddgeir Mælen.
